Ice Dam Melting Socks
Rooftop ice dam (typ.)
If you have ever used a "snow melt sock" before, you know that they provide an inexpensive method for removing roof ice dams and improving your home's heating  efficiency.

Roof ice dams are an annoying source of roof damage, leaks, and heat loss in the winter.
The main causes are drip melt from improperly capped  warm air vent pipes and poor roof insulation.
Laying a snow melt sock onto the roof so it crosses the ice dam and overhangs the gutter
will  melt through the snow and ice and create a channel for water to flow down into the gutters or off the roof.
Ice Melt Socks -FAQs
HOW THE ICE MELT SOCK WORKS
The Ice Melt Sock (IMS)  is  placed adjacent to a typical gutter assembly on a roof edge. The IMS casing is flexible nylon weave and the mesh apertures retain the ice melt crystals. A portion of the ice melt,  dissolves when snow,  ice, or water contacts the IMS, thus forming a flowable solution. This solution inherently has a depressed freezing point for preventing ice formation.
Thus, the water-based solution flowing from the Ice Melt Sock functions to eliminate ice
at roof edging, rain gutters, and downspouts.
